The beginning is just the beginning

Dear Reader,

Last Friday, after a week of recording, working long hours, and almost losing my voice, I finally published the Trailer for Season 2. It felt scary to finally share this with the world, but I pushed through.

This is Our Time podcast trailer for season 2 series 2

I spent most of last week inside this closet recording (check out this video to see the process). Even though I swear I’ve seen a ghost in there before, my trusty sidekick Willis kept us safe.

While recording inside that closet, one of the things that I say in the first episode is this:

“If this story is going to get out there, if it’s going to travel as far as I did, to bring this story to you, then I’m going to need your help.”

Please SHARE THIS LINK - or just forward this whole dang email. I would be extremely grateful!

My goal is to hit 1,000 unique listeners before the podcast fully launches....which will be in a couple of weeks.

So far I’m about one third of the way there….but if you each shared this with at least two people who you thought would enjoy listening, I’m pretty sure that goal would be in sight.

As a producer, it’s hard not to feel guilty about asking for help, and then again for more help. Because the truth is that, even when we work alone a story like this is not made alone….it’s made up of many many voices, who all contribute immensely to the narrative.

When we were on the ship, one of the most valuable things I learned was a system of communicating called 4Mat. It’s used in many disciplines to engage with an audience (or students, or investors) and the idea is that you engage in a way that connects with all types of learners.

Here's how I translated the idea: Say the same thing four different ways to make sure you connect with those folks who are analytical, those who are practical, those who are theoretical....and those who need to connect before they can understand.

We got a chance to put these new skills to the test by delivering our own story in something called Symposium @ Sea (last week we heard about Dr. Sarah Lucas’ stirring talk).

Now here I was, with a bunch of scientists, trying to figure out how I could explain to *how* I make stories (up until then, I might have said I just sit down and do it, but that wasn’t going to cut it).

As I sat up late at night worrying how I was going to do this. How could I communicate, in an engaging way, that this entire project wouldn’t exist without all the generous souls who spoke bravely, who shared thoughts with me, or who contributed to the group conversation, while we were on the ship?

Finally, I came up with a solution. I would provide an example of how it is that I do this...by getting the women in the room to help me make up a story on the spot.

The story is hilarious...and it sort of makes sense, but it’s not going to win any awards!

But the point I wanted to make to them, which I will say here again, is that making this story is an act of doing it together.

And I couldn’t do it without all of them, and this podcast wouldn't exist without all their voices, even the ones you can't hear.

Hey there Reader, Today I've had a few "knew it" moments. And to hear that correctly along with a visual, channel the meme "Nailed it!" But then point your finger down to the table and slowly tap, and the words to yourself. First knew it moment: Sarah Polley's film Women Talking did get the Best Picture nomination today, adapted from a novel by the same name, by another stellar Canadian writer Miriam Toews (Polley also nabbed a nom for Best Adapted Screenplay). Last September I was gifted a...

Dear Reader, I'll get to the sound stuff, but today I want to open with a scene from another sense: smell...and offer a small piece of advice surrounding this. Ostensibly, I write this newsletter to muse about all things audio (sound, and voice, words). And because you read it (thank you!) it indulges me to ascribe some sort of meaning to what ever comes to mind, which perhaps amounts to a potpourri of words about noise. Sunday night my husband and I were making dinner for the mothers (both...

Dear Reader, Happy Antarctica Day! Which is another way of saying let’s celebrate Peace and Science….the founding principles of that continent. In a year where Russia invaded Ukraine, remembering Antarctica as a continent that has never been at war, has no army, possesses no nuclear weapons, is not owned by anyone, and whose primary residents are of two kinds: scientists, and penguins…feels even more prescient. Over these last few years since I’ve been to this frozen, faraway place, I’ve...
